Thru the Lens: The Best of Steuben County

The Steuben County Conference & Visitors Bureau and The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes announce a call to High School student photographers for a juried art competition which will culminate with an awards ceremony and exhibits throughout Steuben County.
 
Thru the Lens: The Best of Steuben County is a photography competition open to area High School students. This will be a juried competition. All student artists will have the opportunity to see their work published online at CorningFingerLakes.com in a special section devoted to the competition. In addition, the top three images in each category will be exhibited throughout the summer of 2010 in select Steuben County locations. The top three images in each category will also be published together in a book available for purchase (proceeds will go to The Arts in Education Program). All photographs will be considered for publication in the 2011 Steuben County Travel Guide.
 
The contest is open to all High School students (grades 9-12) in Steuben & Chemung Counties. There is no entry fee for the contest. Student artists are encouraged to submit up to three photographs in any or all of the categories listed below.


Categories:
 
Places to Go & Things to Do  (families or friends enjoying special events, museum visits, galleries, shopping, state parks, etc)
 
Hands-on Fun  (people enjoying some of the fun hands-on activities like making glass art, pottery, bead jewelry, cooking classes, etc)
 
Architecture & Landscape  scenic shots of places (like Keuka Lake, Canisteo Living Sign, Stony Brook State Park, etc) and buildings (especially major attractions, landmarks, unique structures).
 
Outdoor Fun (people kayaking or canoeing, fishing, hunting, hiking public trails, camping, sailing, geocaching, golfing, cross country skiing, etc).
 
Four Seasons  (the beauty of spring, summer fun, fall foliage, and winter activities-like cross country skiing, snowshoeing)


Submission Guidelines:
 
This is a juried exhibition. Please submit your work via http://www.thruthelenscontest.com/

• Please name your submitted files with your last name followed by a period, first initial, underscore and number. For example:  SMITH.J_1.JPG, SMITH.J_2.JPG
• If you are unable to submit your work via email, please contact Dave DeGolyer at 607-936-6544 x 224 or Tom Oberg at 607-962-5871 x 221 for information regarding alternative methods.
• If your work is chosen, we ask that you deliver it framed, ready to hang, no larger than 16" x 20" (either direction) to The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes, 32 West Market Street, Corning, NY or Steuben County Conference & Visitors Bureau, 1 West Market Street, Suite 301, Corning, NY.


Contest Rules:

• All entries must be received by 5 PM, June 16, 2010 (this is not a postmark date).
• ALL images must be taken in Steuben County, New York!
• Any image containing people must have signed written consent from the people in the image (unless shot from a significant distance and/or faces are unidentifiable). Click Here for a Photo Release Form. Examples of photos requiring release forms can be found Here.
• Any student artist under the age of 18 must provide signed written consent from a parent or guardian. Click Here for an Artist Release Form.
• To be considered for possible appearance in the 2011 Steuben County Travel Guide, images must be in color, but black and white images will be considered for the competition (including publication on Web site, juried exhibition, and publication in the Thru the Lens book).
The Steuben County Conference & Visitors Bureau and The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes reserves the right to not award any prizes for a category if the quantity and/or quality of submissions warrants such a decision.
