Grant Opportunities for Artists, Organizations and Schools

The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes administers a number of grant programs that support community arts programs, school-based arts integration, and individual artists.

New York State Council on the Arts Funded Grant Programs

Each year, The ARTS receives funds from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), which are regranted locally to support public arts projects and arts-in-education programs.

  • Decentralization (DEC)

Please click HERE for information on the 2011 grant cycle.

Deadline: October 1, 2010, 5 pm (postmark and hand delivery)
This matching grant program, which regrants State funds on the local level, focuses on public projects that increase accessibility to the arts for all.  It supports individual artists of all disciplines: writers, performers, musicians, dancers, and visual artists.  DEC also supports collaborations between artists and arts/cultural organizations, and assists emerging arts organizations.  Program performance and impact are measured through self-assessment questionnaires and reports submitted by grantees, and program audits conducted by The ARTS staff.  Since 1978, The ARTS has awarded close to $1.5 million in DEC regrant funds.
Information on 2010 grantees is available here.

Deadline: October 1, 2010, 5 pm (postmark and hand delivery)
Artist-->Crossroads provides support for artists who seek to create new work in 2011.  The program encourages the creation of unique, artist-driven, site-specific multi-disciplinary, visual, performance, dance/choreography, literary/writing, video/film, musical composition or music-related public arts projects occurring in non-arts venues in Chemung, Schuyler and Steuben and Tioga Counties.  Artists may submit proposals for arts and cultural projects inspired by: 1) a particular aspect of the surrounding geography; 2) ethnic traditions; 3) unique or little-known facts about the local community; 4) local and regional history; 5) diversity issues.   Information on 2009 grantees is available
here.

  • Local Capacity Building (LCB)

Information on the 2011 grant cycle will be available soon.

Deadline: December 9, 2009, 5 pm (postmark and hand delivery)

LCB is a statewide effort to provide local support for arts-in-education.  Grounded in research confirming that arts integration across the curriculum improves student performance, the program encourages partnerships between schools, artists and arts/cultural organizations to enhance students attainment of New York State Learning Standards.  This matching grant program also benefits the artists and arts/cultural organizations that participate, through increased public awareness and audience size.  Program success is measured through self-assessment questionnaires and reports submitted by grantees, and by program audits conducted by The ARTS staff.  School districts also evaluate program performance through traditional educational measures, such as test scores.  The ARTS has been regranting funds to these collaborative programs since the early 1990s, and has administered NYSCA's LCB regrant program locally since its inception in 2002.  The ARTS currently administers this program in Allegany, Chemung, Schuyler and Steuben counties, and has regranted close to $100,000 since 2002. Information about 2007-2008 grantees is available here.

Strategic Opportunity Stipends (SOS) provides grants designed to help individual artists of all disciplines take advantage of specific, unique opportunities that will significantly benefit their work or career.  These are $200 - $1500 grants for forthcoming opportunities (not necessarily projects) that are distinct from an artist's ongoing work.  Deadlines are two times a year.

A panel of community members will evaluate applications.  Applications should clearly articulate an opportunity that is new in relation to an artist's career thus far, and should clearly explain the benefits of participation in the opportunity.
