171 Cedar Arts Center
(Corning, NY) January 11, 2024 – 171 Cedar Arts Center presents Brian S. Keeler | Land & Light on Display in the Houghton Gallery at 155 Cedar Street
January 13 – March 8, 2024. Opening Reception January 12 from 5 to 7 pm.
This solo exhibition of oil paintings by local artist Brian S. Keeler celebrates the natural beauty of the Finger Lakes Region, with specific focus given to Keuka and Seneca Lakes. Keeler is intrigued by the ever-changing quality of natural light and the effect it has on the surrounding landscape. Following in the Impressionist tradition, he makes direct studies from nature of the same subject matter during different seasons, weather conditions, and variable sunlight. The canvases on view here were created both in this plein air method as well as in the studio working from preliminary field sketches. The paintings reflect the rolling hills of our region, spectacular cloud formations, vineyards rising above the water, and bales of hay gleaming in the sunlight. They allude to the agrarian tradition that is so deeply rooted in Western New York State.
Keeler’s body of work is distinguished by its fine draftsmanship, saturated color, realistic perspective, and compositional balance. His practice of painting on location lends his landscapes an immediacy and authenticity which can only be achieved through direct study. Keeler is recognized as one of the preeminent representational painters working in the Northeast today. Over the course of 30 years, his work has received a host of awards and has been featured in such leading publications as American Artist Magazine and Pastelogram, a journal for pastel artists. The artist teaches workshops periodically in the Umbria and Tuscany regions of Italy and is based in Corning, NY.
Special thanks is extended to Jesse Gardiner, Owner & Director of West End Gallery, for her generous collaboration on this special exhibition.
