Exploring privacy and identity in the virtual realm…

Open Secrets is an examination of the dualities of personal identity, both genuine and constructed. Virtual platforms such as social media provide the tools to craft a public identity that is strategically edited. When these manufactured identities are shared online, they become accessible to others and can be harnessed in ways we cannot control. Somostrada uses portraiture inspired by public social media to question whether being digitally available also makes us digitally vulnerable.

Born in the Philippines, Somostrada immigrated to America with his family at the age of two. He was raised in Elmira, NY, by his single mother and grandmother. Somostrada is a community activist and working artist whose body of work explores the relationship between people and technology in the modern era.
