Words on Wheels, a new literary art project, was funded by The Arts Council of the Southern Finger Lakes for 2020.
Words on Wheels will traverse the roads, connecting several groups of being and endeavor: the frail, food insecure, elderly isolated, served by Corning Meals on Wheels, and area poets, area artists and poem hunters. Poetry art cards will be delivered with meals in Corning, NY. There will be something to hold and review for seniors, art missives from outside their domiciles. “Wild” cards will be placed throughout the community and people will be encouraged to find them and report on finding them.
Poet and artist Akua Lezli Hope is the grant recipient. She was inspired by her own circumstance and a similar New York City project. “This project‘s overarching goal is to connect different audiences to poetry – both my poetry and other area/regional poets, too. I was inspired by the Poetry Society of America’s idea to include a poem card with the distribution of Meals on Wheels. They chose a dead poet. I prefer using living, area poets and artists. As I am also food insecure, elderly and disabled, this seems a great connection.”
Area poets and artists are sought for participation in the project. 11 poetry and art cards will be created and distributed throughout the year. Short poems and images of artworks that translate well to a small rendering/presentation format will be solicited for the poem cards.
Poems of 25 lines and less and images of art work that will fit a 5″x7″ format are solicited. The deadline for submission is February 15, 2020 . Send poems and jpgs to firstname.lastname@example.org.
