Junior String Ensemble (JSE) – Advanced elementary, middle school, and younger high school students who play a string instrument are welcome to audition. We recommend that students play at approximately an advanced NYSSMA Level 3-4. Students should be capable of playing in keys with up to three flats and three sharps. Beginning shifting is a must. (Those not familiar with NYSSMA ratings should e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org for information.) Students should be prepared to play a solo selection, without accompaniment, and scales. Sight reading will also be included.
What should I expect at the audition?
Each audition will last approximately ten minutes. Be ready early, and please be patient if auditions are running behind schedule. Both Youth Orchestra and Junior String Ensemble applicants will be asked to play scales and a solo selection of his or her choice, without an accompanist. The audition will also include sight-reading. Trumpet and French horn players may be asked to transpose.
