Business of Art 2017-2018 Schedule

Business of Art addresses the practical needs of artists and not-for-profit arts and cultural organizations. Check out our workshop series to learn about filing taxes as an artist, creating a website, fundraising, writing artist statements and bios, marketing yourself, and more!

Cost is $10 for members and $25 for nonmembers.

The 2017-2018 Business of Art Season will run from October 2017 through March 2018.

    Do you want an artist website, but think you can’t create one by yourself? Or think it will be too expensive? Good news! We are here to help. Join us for Website Building 101. From which website builders to use to how you create text and images you will leave this workshop with the tools needed to go home and get to work on your own awesome new website. In addition to showing examples of different websites, we will also walk you through the step-by-step process of building your own site. Chris Walters of Chris Walters Photography will lead the workshop.

    Fundraising 101

    Join us for this overview of the corporate, foundation, and individual giving realms, focusing on time-tested fundraising techniques and major national giving trends. Offers an effective mix of educational and “how to” information of direct benefit to professional and volunteer fundraisers and virtually all nonprofit leaders. Led by Mark Wille of MRW Consulting, this workshop aims to take the guesswork out of fundraising so you feel confident when you go for that big ask. Mark Wille’s career spans 39 years in both the nonprofit and for-profit realms. A seasoned executive with diversified experience in the fields of resource development, public relations, and institutional administration, he brings a wealth of knowledge and talent to organizations striving to compete in today’s fast-changing–and often unforgiving–marketplace.

    Crafting Your Social Media Strategy

    Sean Lukasik of CreAgent Marketing will present the use of branding techniques and how they apply to social media content. You’ll learn how to curate and share content across the main platforms: Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. You’ll leave with an understanding of each social media site and how often you should be updating them.

    Business and Goals 101

    Start your artist-business journey on a path to a success by establishing SMART goals and creating a business plan! You’ve probably already got business cards and a basic website and now you’re ready to get down to business and lock in your goals and make a plan. Whether your goals include getting more out of your art, bringing more people to your art shows, or increasing sales we will develop a roadmap to get you there. Laura will spend the last hour of this session doing one-on-one meetings with each artist so be sure to sign up early to claim your spot! Only 15 registrants will be accepted for this session.

    Many artists would like to have representation through a store or gallery, but find the idea of getting ready and actually making the pitch too daunting. Bettsie will guide you through the entire process and fill you with the confidence to make that appointment to show your work. In addition, Bettsie will address the topics of selling through wholesale shows and online wholesale venues.

    Galleries at a Glance

    If your dream as an artist is to find representation by a gallery then this panel discussion is for you! Join Jesse Gardner of West End Gallery, Ann Welles of Exhibit A, artist and previous gallery owner, Denny Smith, and John Brunelli of Anthony Brunelli Fine Arts as they discuss what it takes to show in a gallery. The world of galleries is changing so our experts will talk about brick and mortar galleries, as well as online galleries and how they choose their artists. Come prepared with questions as this will be an interactive panel discussion. Our panelists want to hear from you!
