Queer Theater Project

The ARTS Council of the Southern Finger Lakes (The ARTS Council) invites self-identified Queer writers to join The Queer Theater project, a 4-part theater workshop ending in a staged reading with actors. Registration is open until March 22, 2024.

What does it mean to be Queer in the first quarter of the 21st century? How do we see ourselves represented on screen and stage? The Queer experience is fetishized by pop culture while simultaneously demeaned in casual conversation or even condemned in national politics. What stories would we tell about ourselves if given the opportunity?

Workshops will be led by thespian and writer, Jeffrey Mathews. Jeffrey has years of writing, producing, acting, and directing experience. During this 4-part workshop, Jeffrey will introduce the fundamentals of script-writing and theater production. All sessions including the performance will be held in The ARTS Council, 79 West Market Street, Corning, NY.

Writers will need to commit to the following schedule:

  • Saturday, March 30, 2024, 2-5pm: script writing basics and choosing a theme
  • Saturday, April 20, 2024, 2-5pm: workshop first draft
  • Saturday, May 11, 2024, 2-5pm: workshop second draft
  • Sunday, June 23, 2024, 2-5pm: workshop third draft with actors
  • Saturday, June 29, 2024, 2-4pm: staged reading with actors followed by an audience talk-back

This program is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required.
