THE EXHIBIT
“At the Jewish Table” is an exhibit inspired by the Elmira Jewish Community’s most well-known public event, the Jewish Food Festival. While the festival creates an atmosphere reminiscent of New York City’s Lower East Side at the height of Jewish immigration to America, Elmira had its own “lower east side,” a neighborhood, now vanished, which was once the center of Jewish worship, family life, and business. This exhibit invites you to explore the migration and evolution of Elmira’s Jewish community, its contributions to the city’s commerce, and the traditions of the table which have bound Elmira’s Jews together across cultures, congregations, families, and neighborhoods.
