Color and negative space are probably the strongest forces driving Barbara's artwork.  Always experimenting and incorporating new media and techniques, her works are diverse yet there is a consistency in her use of color. "Transience intrigues me, and that is what I try to capture in my works with color and negative space: a sense of looking through or beyond time, another dimension or even an unknown." Overall, Barbara's works are small but filled with color and passion. There is a sense of controlled abandon, allowing things to happen yet with direction. "Chance.  And by chance I mean looking for the opening or opportunities in a work as it changes. That, for me, is when art becomes electric."

I am a professional musician: singer (classical tenor), choral conductor, voice teacher, and composer. I have performed in opera, concert, and recital in such venues as New York's Avery Fisher, Alice Tully, and Carnegie Halls, and with major orchestras. I currently serve on the voice faculty of the Ithaca College School of Music, and am Choir Director at Wells College. I conduct Ithaca's premier a cappella choral group, the Cayuga Vocal Ensemble, and the Women's Chorale @171 in Corning. I am also a mixed media/collage artist, and have worked in other craft media as well (polymer clay, fiber arts.)

I am the granddaughter of an intrepid self-taught photographer and painter who photographed the Great San Francisco Earthquake from a hot air balloon. I never knew him, but I feel like he is with me, especially when I am working to enhance photographs by hand with encaustics and mixed media.

I speak for the juncture of Finger Lake’s culture and world culture. Subjects span from the early Haudenosaunee people, to the underground railroad, to the Women’s Right movement, and to the social impact of the ever-changing dominant local economies. In a century when rural and urban life are tearing apart it seems worthwhile to express that until recently all life was rural, or near-rural. Using the form, color, and motion of mobiles I borrow the wind, sun, rain, and snow to demonstrate that contrary to traditional understandings, mobiles can be deeply emotive.

    Joyce S Schwartz

A lifelong resident of Steuben county, I was lucky enough to have had an excellent art teacher for four years in high school learning about various techniques and about the old masters. I became serious about creating art after my children left home and have taken classes and workshops in North Carolina and Michigan, and locally with Wilson Ong, a professional artist from Corning. I think I have finally found my niche with new techniques and mixed medias that I'm creating now.
