Project Title: Finnish-American Dance Music

Project Summary: Richard Koski will teach Michael Ludgate and Katrina Mackey Finnish-American dance tunes he has learned over his 50 years performing this music. His repertoire comes from a variety of sources: his father, performing nationally and internationally, through his own research into Finnish-American music, and his own compositions in Finnish styles. Many of these tunes — waltzes, schottisches, polkas, and mazurkas — have been played in the Finnish community in the Finger Lakes since 1910.

Work Statement Excerpt: “Besides Richard, there is no one of his generation in the local Finnish-American community who still plays these tunes. Apprentices Katrina Mackey and Mike Ludgate both have Finnish-American family backgrounds. In 2016, they began learning and performing Finnish standard tunes and formed the band Metku. They are the next generation of Finnish-American musicians keeping this music alive locally. ”
